Opposition by some Petal homeowners who would have lost part of their front yards to sidewalks led to more than $200,000 in grant funding being rejected by the city. Former Alderman James Moore said the Safe Routes to Schools project would have funded about five miles of sidewalks and about a mile of bike trails in various areas of the city located near schools.
